Union Minister of State for Sports Raksha Khadse announced a special nationwide Asmita League on March 2, 2026, to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, aiming to engage 250,000 women athletes across 250 locations. The events focus on 100m, 200m, and 400m sprints in Under-13, 13-18, and 18+ categories, building on Khelo India’s mission for gender-inclusive sports.

Event Structure

Competitions will span over 30 states and union territories, including Northeast regions like Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram, with each venue staffed by 5 technical officials, 10 volunteers, a competition manager, Past Champion Athlete, and District Youth Officer. Partners include MY Bharat, Khelo India Centres, SAI, National Centres of Excellence, and district associations to ensure broad reach even in former Naxal areas.

Program Impact

ASMITA has already conducted 2,600+ leagues across 34 disciplines in 550 districts and 700 cities, involving over 300,000 women and gaining popularity nationwide. Khadse highlighted its alignment with PM Modi’s goal to encourage rural and small-town girls toward sports careers, preparing India for Commonwealth Games 2030 and 2036 Olympics bid.

The single-day mega-event targets district-level readiness, integrating young women through a proven platform while fostering competitive spirit and visibility for female athletes. It underscores government commitment to empowering women via sports infrastructure and opportunities.
