Kerala CM Rejects Allegations of Secret Political Outreach
Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan on Tuesday defended his meeting with leaders of the Hindu Aikya Vedi, asserting that the interaction was conducted openly and transparently, unlike what he alleged were the previous government’s covert engagements with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). His remarks came amid mounting political criticism over the meeting with the Hindu organisation.
Responding to the controversy, Satheesan said there was nothing unusual about meeting representatives of organisations that seek appointments with the Chief Minister. He maintained that the delegation had submitted a memorandum on public issues and that the meeting took place officially at his office, dismissing attempts to portray it as a political alignment.
CM Accuses Previous Government of Double Standards
Launching a sharp attack on former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Satheesan alleged that the previous Left government had maintained secret contacts with the RSS while publicly criticising such organisations. He argued that his administration had acted with complete transparency, unlike what he described as “behind-the-scenes” engagements under the previous regime.
The Chief Minister said his government would continue to meet any lawful organisation that approached it with public concerns, irrespective of political or ideological differences. He stressed that such meetings should not be interpreted as endorsement of an organisation’s ideology.
Political Row Intensifies in Kerala
The meeting has triggered a fresh political confrontation in Kerala, with opposition parties questioning the Congress-led government’s engagement with the Hindu Aikya Vedi, an organisation associated with the Sangh Parivar. Critics have accused the government of sending mixed political signals, while supporters argue that elected governments must remain accessible to all sections of society.
Satheesan countered the criticism by pointing out that similar meetings between government leaders and Hindu Aikya Vedi representatives had taken place in the past without attracting comparable objections. He accused the opposition of selectively raising the issue for political gain.
Debate Over Political Transparency Continues
The controversy has reignited debate over the relationship between mainstream political parties and socio-cultural organisations in Kerala. While the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) insists the meeting was purely administrative, the opposition continues to question its political implications.
With both sides trading allegations, the episode has added another dimension to Kerala’s evolving political landscape, where ideological positioning and transparency in political engagements remain subjects of intense public scrutiny.
