Saudi authorities reported that debris from an intercepted ballistic missile damaged a kindergarten and a medical clinic complex in Riyadh as Yemen’s Houthi movement claimed attacks targeting Saudi Arabia’s capital and other locations. The incident comes amid an escalation in regional hostilities.
Missile Interception Causes Property Damage
Saudi Civil Defence said fragments fell in Riyadh after a ballistic missile was intercepted and destroyed on Thursday. The incident caused material damage to the two civilian facilities. Authorities did not immediately disclose whether anyone was injured.
Houthis Claim Attacks on Saudi Targets
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree announced attacks targeting King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, as well as an airport in Najran and an airbase in Khamis Mushait. Saudi-led coalition forces said they intercepted missiles heading towards Riyadh and Khamis Mushait. The competing claims about the attacks’ outcomes have not all been independently verified.
Airport Disruptions and Security Concerns
The attacks also raised concerns about aviation safety. Flights at Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport faced delays and cancellations, according to passenger information. The United States urged its citizens in Saudi Arabia to exercise heightened vigilance.
Wider Conflict in Yemen
The latest incidents come as fighting between Yemen’s internationally recognised government and the Houthis intensifies. Saudi Arabia has supported the Yemeni government through a military coalition since 2015. Renewed fighting has worsened humanitarian conditions, with the United Nations reporting substantial displacement since July.
