New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to achieving self-reliance in defence production, stating that India is moving rapidly towards becoming a major defence manufacturing hub under the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Addressing a gathering of defence personnel, industry leaders, and stakeholders, Singh highlighted the remarkable transformation of India’s defence sector over the past decade. He noted that the country has significantly reduced its dependence on foreign military equipment while simultaneously expanding indigenous production capabilities.
“India is progressing rapidly towards self-reliance in defence. Our goal is not only to meet domestic requirements but also to emerge as a trusted exporter of defence equipment to friendly nations,” the Defence Minister said.
Rajnath Singh pointed to the growing success of indigenous defence platforms, including missile systems, artillery guns, armoured vehicles, naval assets, and advanced aerospace technologies. He emphasised that collaboration between the armed forces, defence research institutions, and private industry has accelerated innovation and strengthened India’s strategic capabilities.
The Minister also highlighted the increasing participation of Indian startups and private enterprises in defence manufacturing, describing them as key contributors to the country’s long-term security architecture. According to him, defence corridors, policy reforms, and production-linked initiatives are helping create a robust ecosystem for domestic defence production.
India’s defence exports have witnessed substantial growth in recent years, reaching new milestones and opening opportunities in international markets. Government officials believe this trend reflects growing confidence in the quality and reliability of Indian-made defence systems.
Security experts note that greater self-reliance not only enhances military preparedness but also reduces strategic vulnerabilities associated with excessive dependence on foreign suppliers during times of conflict or geopolitical uncertainty.
With multiple indigenous projects currently under development and production, India continues its journey towards building a modern, technologically advanced, and self-sufficient defence sector capable of meeting future security challenges.
