Health authorities in Karnataka have issued a precautionary alert after a woman who recently arrived in Bengaluru from Uganda was isolated on suspicion of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). Officials stressed that no Ebola case has been confirmed in India so far, but surveillance and monitoring measures have been intensified following the incident.
According to reports, the 28-year-old woman arrived at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport on May 23 and later complained of mild body ache and symptoms that prompted medical authorities to initiate isolation protocols. She was shifted to the Epidemic Diseases Hospital in Indiranagar as a precautionary measure while samples were collected for Ebola testing.
The suspected case comes amid a growing Ebola outbreak in parts of Africa, particularly the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, where the World Health Organization (WHO) recently raised the national risk level to “very high.” The current outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which no approved vaccine currently exists.
Karnataka health authorities have activated rapid response protocols and instructed hospitals to remain on alert. Screening and surveillance measures for international travellers arriving from affected African regions have also been strengthened.
Officials clarified that the woman’s condition remains under observation and that there is no evidence of community transmission or an Ebola outbreak in India at this stage. The Union Health Ministry has also reportedly intensified monitoring at airports and health facilities following the WHO alert.
Ebola Virus Disease is a severe viral illness that spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals or contaminated surfaces. Symptoms typically include fever, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle pain, and in severe cases, internal and external bleeding.
The WHO recently warned that the outbreak in Congo and Uganda could worsen because of delayed detection, cross-border movement, and challenges in containing transmission in conflict-affected regions. Reports indicate that hundreds of suspected cases and significant fatalities have already been recorded in central Africa.
International concern has increased in recent days, with suspected Ebola-related alerts also reported in countries such as Italy after travellers returning from Uganda showed symptoms consistent with the disease.
Health experts in India have urged the public not to panic while advising people returning from Ebola-affected countries to immediately report symptoms and cooperate with health screening measures. Authorities said contact tracing and preventive isolation protocols are ready if required.
The Karnataka government is expected to continue monitoring the situation closely until the woman’s laboratory results are confirmed. Officials said all precautionary steps are being taken to ensure public safety and prevent any possible spread of infection.
