Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay concluded his first official visit to New Delhi after assuming office, holding crucial meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman while a proposed meeting with senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi was deferred due to scheduling constraints. The visit has drawn significant political attention because of the evolving power dynamics in Tamil Nadu and Vijay’s growing national profile.
During his meeting with Prime Minister Modi, Vijay raised several issues concerning Tamil Nadu, including the contentious Mekedatu dam project proposed by Karnataka, the arrest of Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy, financial assistance for the state, and the controversy surrounding the Tamil Thai Vazhthu protocol at official functions. The meeting marked the first official interaction between Vijay and Modi since the formation of the new Tamil Nadu government.
One of the major topics discussed was the Mekedatu reservoir project across the Cauvery river. Ahead of the Delhi visit, Vijay had written to Prime Minister Modi urging the Centre to reject Karnataka’s Detailed Project Report for the project, arguing that it violates the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal award and Supreme Court directions. Tamil Nadu fears the project could adversely affect water availability for farmers dependent on the Cauvery basin.
Vijay also highlighted concerns regarding the repeated detention of Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lankan authorities. According to officials, the Chief Minister requested stronger intervention from the Centre to ensure the protection of fishermen and secure the release of those currently detained.
Another issue raised during the meeting involved the Tamil Thai Vazhthu controversy. Vijay reportedly sought clarification regarding a recent protocol issue related to the order in which the Tamil invocation song, Vande Mataram, and the National Anthem are performed during official government events. The matter had triggered political and cultural debate within Tamil Nadu.
Apart from meeting the Prime Minister, Vijay also held discussions with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman regarding financial allocations, infrastructure support, and development projects for Tamil Nadu. Sources indicated that Vijay pressed for additional central assistance and funding support for ongoing welfare and infrastructure initiatives.
Political observers closely watched the visit because Vijay currently leads Tamil Nadu’s coalition government with support from Congress and other alliance partners. Reports had suggested that meetings with Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge were planned during the visit. However, those meetings were eventually postponed due to scheduling issues, prompting speculation about political messaging and alliance equations.
Despite the deferred Congress meeting, there has been no official indication of any strain within the alliance. Congress leaders had strongly supported Vijay during the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, and Rahul Gandhi was present during Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony earlier this month.
The Delhi visit is being viewed as politically significant because it reflects Vijay’s attempt to balance regional interests with constructive engagement with the Central government. Analysts believe the Chief Minister is trying to position himself as a strong federal leader while maintaining cooperative relations with both alliance partners and the Union government.
Vijay returned to Chennai after completing the visit, with officials indicating that discussions on the issues raised during the meetings would continue through coordination between the Tamil Nadu government and various central ministries.
