Senior Congress leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan was elected as the new Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly after securing 101 votes during the Assembly election held on Thursday. The veteran legislator defeated Left Democratic Front candidate M. Swaraj, who received 38 votes in the contest.
The election marked a significant political moment in the newly constituted Assembly as the United Democratic Front strengthened its position following its return to power in the state. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and senior ministers congratulated Radhakrishnan after the announcement of the results inside the Assembly.
Veteran Congress Leader Takes Charge
Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan is regarded as one of Kerala Congress’ most experienced leaders with decades of legislative and administrative experience. Representing the Kottayam constituency, he has previously served as Home Minister, Transport Minister and Forest Minister in different Congress-led governments in Kerala.
Known for his calm parliamentary conduct and legal background, Radhakrishnan is expected to play a key role in ensuring smooth functioning of the Assembly during a politically charged term. Several opposition leaders also extended support and wished him success in maintaining neutrality while presiding over House proceedings.
Focus on Assembly Discipline and Governance
In his first remarks after assuming office, Radhakrishnan stressed the importance of democratic values, constructive debates and maintaining the dignity of the Assembly. He stated that all members, irrespective of political affiliation, would receive equal opportunity to raise public concerns inside the House.
Political observers believe his experience could help the Assembly avoid repeated disruptions and improve legislative efficiency. The new Speaker is also expected to oversee several major policy discussions involving Kerala’s economic recovery, infrastructure projects and welfare schemes during the upcoming session.
The Speaker’s election comes at a crucial time for Kerala politics as both the ruling alliance and opposition prepare for intense debates on governance, development and financial management in the state Assembly.
