US President Donald Trump has paid an emotional tribute to Senator Lindsey Graham following his death at the age of 71, describing him as a “true American patriot” and one of the most influential Republican leaders of his generation. Trump praised Graham’s decades of public service, commitment to national security, and unwavering support for the United States.
In a statement, Trump said Graham would be “greatly missed” and remembered him as a trusted ally who played a significant role in shaping American foreign policy and national security. Although the two leaders had differences during the 2016 presidential campaign, they later developed a close political partnership, with Graham becoming one of Trump’s strongest supporters in the Senate.
Graham was widely known for his hawkish stance on international affairs, particularly his support for Ukraine, Israel, and tougher sanctions against Russia. In recent months, he attracted international attention after introducing legislation proposing tariffs of up to 500% on countries that continued importing Russian energy, including India, China, and Brazil. Graham argued that such measures would increase economic pressure on Russia over the war in Ukraine.
According to preliminary findings from the medical examiner, Graham died due to an aortic rupture after a brief illness. His passing prompted tributes from political leaders across the United States and around the world, who remembered him for his long Senate career and influential role in shaping US foreign and defence policy.
Graham represented South Carolina in the US Senate for more than two decades and served on several key congressional committees. He was recognised as one of Washington’s most prominent voices on defence, international relations, and bipartisan negotiations. His death leaves a significant vacancy in the Senate and marks the end of a political career that spanned more than 30 years.
Political observers believe Graham’s absence could influence ongoing debates in Congress on foreign policy, sanctions, defence spending, and US trade strategy. His proposals on Russia, global security, and international alliances had shaped major policy discussions, ensuring that his legacy will continue to influence American politics in the years ahead.
