A tiny Japanese macaque named Punch-kun has become a global internet sensation at Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Gardens, drawing crowds after viral videos showed the orphaned infant clinging to a stuffed orangutan toy amid troop rejections and a dramatic “punch” moment.

Born in July 2025 and abandoned by his mother, baby Punch receives 24/7 care from zookeepers who introduced the plush toy as a comfort surrogate. Clips of him dragging it everywhere exploded online, amassing millions of views, while a recent video captured an adult monkey scolding and dragging him during socialization attempts—prompting the zoo’s clarification that it’s normal macaque discipline, not harm. Punch bounced back, resuming play and interactions as usual.

The zoo’s February 20 statement emphasized his progress: “Punch shows resilience… support his efforts rather than feel sorry.” Recent footage even shows adult monkeys grooming and hugging him, signaling growing acceptance in the troop.

Tourism Boost and Heartwarming Lessons

Fans flock from Tokyo to cheer “Ganbare Punch!” (Go Punch!), boosting zoo visits. His story highlights primate social dynamics and human intervention’s role in wildlife rehab, resonating amid Japan’s love for cute animal tales (kawaii culture).
