Statewide Anti-Narcotics Drive Begins
Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has officially launched “Operation Toofan: The Narco Hunt,” a major statewide campaign aimed at dismantling drug trafficking networks and curbing the growing narcotics menace across the state. The initiative marks one of the most extensive anti-drug operations undertaken by the Kerala Police in recent years.
Announcing the campaign, Chennithala said the operation would target every link in the narcotics chain, including drug suppliers, traffickers, peddlers, and those involved in promoting the illegal trade. The drive is being carried out in coordination with the Health and Excise Departments to eliminate the drug menace at its roots.
Focus on Schools and Youth Protection
The anti-drug campaign commenced alongside the reopening of schools, reflecting the government’s concern over the increasing influence of narcotics among young people. Authorities have identified the protection of students and youth as a key objective of the operation. Special surveillance and enforcement measures will be implemented around educational institutions and areas considered vulnerable to drug-related activities.
The Home Minister emphasized that gangs targeting children and teenagers would face stringent action under the new initiative. Intelligence-based operations and coordinated enforcement efforts are expected to play a central role in the crackdown.
Rising Drug Cases Raise Alarm
The launch of Operation Toofan comes amid growing concern over the sharp rise in narcotics-related offences in Kerala. According to official data, more than 36,000 cases were registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in 2025, significantly higher than the previous year. The increase has prompted authorities to intensify efforts against organized drug syndicates operating within and beyond the state.
Inter-State Networks Under Scanner
As part of the operation, Kerala Police will work closely with law enforcement agencies in neighbouring states to dismantle inter-state drug networks. Special monitoring systems will also be deployed to prevent the inflow of synthetic drugs, chemical narcotics, and hybrid ganja into Kerala. Authorities have indicated that strict action will be taken against drug-related activities in hotels, party venues, coastal regions, and other identified hotspots.
Public Participation Key to Success
The government has appealed for public cooperation in making the campaign successful. Police officials have urged families, educational institutions, and community organizations to actively participate in the fight against drug abuse. Officials believe that a combined effort involving law enforcement and society will be essential to achieving a drug-free Kerala.
