Fire Erupts Near Barakah Facility
A suspected drone strike sparked a fire near the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday, intensifying fears of a wider regional escalation amid the ongoing Iran-linked conflict in the Gulf.
Authorities in Abu Dhabi confirmed that the attack struck an electrical generator located outside the plant’s inner security perimeter. Officials said emergency response teams quickly contained the blaze and confirmed there were no injuries, radiation leaks, or operational disruptions at the nuclear facility.
UAE Confirms Safety Systems Intact
The UAE’s Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation stated that all safety systems at the plant remained fully functional and radiation levels continued to remain normal following the incident. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said it was closely monitoring the situation and urged “maximum military restraint” around nuclear infrastructure across the region.
Government officials stressed that the fire did not affect the plant’s reactors or power generation operations. Authorities also reassured residents that there was no threat to public safety.
Drones Entered Through Western Border
The UAE Ministry of Defence revealed that three drones had entered the country from the western border. According to officials, two drones were intercepted successfully by air defence systems, while the third managed to hit the generator area near the nuclear facility.
Emirati authorities described the incident as a “dangerous escalation” and warned that the country reserves the right to respond to attacks targeting civilian and energy infrastructure. Security agencies have launched an investigation into the origin and trajectory of the drones.
Regional Tensions Continue to Rise
Although no group immediately claimed responsibility, the strike comes amid heightened tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. The Gulf region has witnessed repeated drone and missile attacks in recent months, with strategic installations and energy facilities increasingly becoming targets.
The Barakah plant, the Arab world’s first operational nuclear power station, is central to the UAE’s long-term energy strategy. Security analysts say the latest attack highlights growing concerns over the vulnerability of critical infrastructure in the Middle East despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to contain the conflict.
