Joint Action Targets Militant Infrastructure

Security forces in Manipur have destroyed 12 illegal bunkers in coordinated operations across Kangpokpi and Ukhrul districts, in a continued effort to curb militant activity and restore stability in the region.

The action was carried out following intelligence inputs about the presence of fortified structures set up by armed groups in sensitive hill areas.

Operations Across Multiple Locations

According to officials, the bunkers were dismantled at several locations:

  • Kangpokpi district: Three bunkers at Lungter Hill, and one each at Tingpibung and Leplen villages under Saikul police station limits
  • Ukhrul district: Seven bunkers cleared from multiple sites under Litan police station jurisdiction

The operations were conducted as part of ongoing area domination exercises by security forces.

Linked to Ongoing Ethnic Tensions

Authorities indicated that these illegal bunkers had been constructed by armed groups amid ongoing tensions between Kuki and Tangkhul Naga communities, which have seen periodic clashes in recent months.

The hill districts have remained sensitive zones, with sporadic incidents of violence and the presence of fortified positions used for tactical advantage.

Push to Prevent Re-establishment of Armed Positions

Security agencies have stepped up patrols and coordinated operations to ensure that such structures are not rebuilt.

Recent weeks have seen intensified action across multiple districts, with forces focusing on dismantling hostile infrastructure and maintaining control over vulnerable zones.

Focus on Restoring Stability

The latest operation forms part of a broader strategy to stabilise Manipur, which has been grappling with ethnic conflict and security challenges since 2023.

By targeting bunkers and fortified positions, authorities aim to:

  • Reduce the operational capacity of armed groups
  • Prevent escalation of violence
  • Strengthen security presence in conflict-prone areas

Continued Vigilance in a Sensitive Region

While the destruction of bunkers marks a tactical success, officials acknowledge that maintaining long-term peace will require sustained vigilance and coordinated efforts across agencies.

The developments highlight the ongoing challenges in Manipur’s hill districts, where security forces continue to balance enforcement with efforts to restore normalcy.
